Metro Station  Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA) comprises 16 elected Members appointed by the five Metropolitan District Councils that make up Tyne and Wear.
Tyne and Wear, with relatively low car ownership, has a higher proportion of public transport movements than many other areas. The transport system is therefore very important to people who don’t have access to a car. It can also play a significant part in reducing car use by providing an acceptable alternative for many kinds of journey.

The overall aim of TWITA, therefore, is to ensure that Tyne and Wear has a fully integrated multi-modal transport system that meets the general needs of people who live and work in and travel through the area and which underpins the social and economic fabric of the conurbation.

TWITA, as the 'local transport authority' and in partnership with the five district councils, produces the five-year Local Transport Plan (LTP) and Bus Strategy aimed at securing the integration of all modes of transport in the area.

As well as all forms of public transport, the plan's strategies also take account of the needs of the private motorist, the freight transport industry and the health, safety and well being of the area's County's residents and visitors.
